What Happens in a Tiger Taekwon-Do Trial Class?
Let’s begin. If you’ve ever wondered what goes on in a Tiger Taekwon-Do trial class, you’re not alone. Many parents and students want to know what to expect before stepping into the dojang for the very first time.
Simply put, a trial class is your child’s (or your) first hands-on experience with Taekwon-Do, one of the world’s most respected martial arts. It’s fun, grounding, and designed so beginners feel safe and supported from the moment they walk in.
At Tiger Taekwon-Do, our trial classes gently introduce students to the basics of traditional Taekwon-Do, helping them understand the heart behind the art: discipline, confidence, and the courage to try.

What Exactly Is a Taekwon-Do Trial Class?
A Taekwon-Do trial class is a free, welcoming introductory session where children, teens, and adults can experience our club before joining. It’s your chance to meet the instructors, feel the rhythm of the class, and learn the foundational movements.
Importantly, the purpose isn’t to test ability; it’s to show how Taekwon-Do builds focus, respect, and confidence in every student.
When you’re ready, you can book your session easily using our Free Trial Form.
1. Warm Welcome and Introduction
Warm smiles greet you first. When you step into the dojang, our instructor introduces you to the class routine and walks you through how training works.
At Tiger Taekwon-Do, every student, especially beginners, is supported from the start. We explain what Taekwon-Do means, where it comes from, and why it matters.
Did You Know?
Taekwon-Do is a Korean martial art. “Tae” = foot, “Kwon” = hand, “Do” = the way. Together: the way of the hand and foot.
So when parents ask, “Is Taekwon-Do Korean?” Yes, absolutely. Born in Korea in 1955, it blends traditional movement with modern discipline and philosophy.
Learn more about its roots on our Why Taekwon-Do page.
2. Light Warm-Up and Stretching
Then we move. After introductions, the class begins with a gentle warm-up to prepare the body and calm the mind, which are vital parts of every session.
Students practise stretches, simple mobility drills, and balance exercises. Warm-ups are often playful, using games that strengthen conditioning, coordination and focus without them even noticing.
3. Learning the Basics of Traditional Taekwon-Do
Here’s where things get exciting. Once warmed up, students begin learning their first traditional stances and techniques, such as simple punches, blocks, and kicks, all taught safely and slowly.
Importantly, we introduce bowing etiquette, which teaches respect; students begin to understand discipline through standing still, listening well, and trying their best.
💬 “Taekwon-Do teaches more than movement. It teaches the right attitude.”

4. Children’s Taekwon-Do: Fun and Confidence-Building
Children thrive here. Our kids’ classes blend fun, structure, and values, creating learning that sticks.
During their first class, tamariki take part in interactive drills that build balance, focus, and teamwork. Encouragement comes first; competition can wait.
We remind every child that mistakes aren’t failures, they’re stepping stones. That mindset builds the heart of Taekwon-Do: perseverance, integrity, and self-control.

5. Introduction to Taekwon-Do Belt System
Every journey begins with white. The white belt represents a blank slate: openness, curiosity, and a willingness to learn.
From early colour belts, including yellow, green, blue and red, through to black belt, kids love learning about this because it gives them visible goals and something hopeful to aim toward.
Explore the full rank structure on our Taekwon-Do Resources page.
6. Confidence and Focus Drills
Confidence grows quickly. During the lesson, instructors lead short, energetic activities that build focus and discipline. These may include:
- Balancing while kicking
- Listening and reacting to instructions
- Team challenges that encourage cooperation
Surprisingly, even after just one class, some parents notice their child standing taller, smiling more, and showing new confidence.
That’s Taekwon-Do; it strengthens both body and mind.
7. Cool Down and Positive Reflection
Cooling down matters. At the end of the class, students gently stretch to relax their muscles.
Afterwards, the instructor gathers everyone together for reflection, a moment to acknowledge effort, focus, and small wins.
Children are praised for their courage to try; this boosts confidence and helps them carry Taekwon-Do lessons into everyday life.
You’ll also have time to ask questions, explore class options, and learn about next steps.
The Philosophy Behind Every Trial Class
Taekwon-Do isn’t just physical training. It’s a martial art that blends mind, body, and spirit.
Every class, including the first one, introduces students to the five Tenets of Taekwon-Do:
- Courtesy
- Integrity
- Perseverance
- Self-Control
- Indomitable Spirit
These values shape everything we teach.
Traditional vs. Modern Taekwon-Do Experience
We honour both. At Tiger Taekwon-Do, we respect the roots of traditional Taekwon-Do and use modern teaching methods that work for today’s learners.
Traditional Taekwon-Do emphasises patterns, precision, and moral values. Modern Taekwon-Do brings energy, creativity, and fitness-focused learning.
Together, these create a holistic, enjoyable experience. This blend is also what sets Taekwon-Do apart from other martial arts.
