1-The Science of Taekwon-Do: The Secret of Reaction Force
In ITF Taekwon-Do, we rarely use just one part of the body in isolation. If you perform a punch with your right hand, your left hand pulls back to your hip with equal speed and intensity. This is known as Reaction Force.
Based on Newton’s Third Law—which states that for every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction—this pulling motion stabilises the torso. It significantly increases the impact of the strike.
This is why our Palmerston North students can hit with such surprising power. They are utilising the entirety of their body mass rather than relying solely on the muscles in their arms.
2. Concentration and the Impact Point
Physical force is at its most effective when it is concentrated into a small, specific area. Consider the difference between the pressure of a flat palm versus the sharp point of a finger.
In our Taekwon-Do training, we instruct students to strike with very specific “tools.” These include the two large knuckles of the fist, the outer edge of the hand, or the ball of the foot.
By concentrating the total body weight into that tiny impact point, even a smaller student can produce enough force to defend themselves effectively. This focus on the impact point is a critical component of the science of Taekwon-Do.
3. Equilibrium and Balance
It is impossible to generate significant power if the body is off-balance or falling over. We spend a significant amount of time focusing on Equilibrium. This involves maintaining a low centre of gravity and ensuring that the body weight is distributed correctly in every stance. Whether it is an L-stance or a walking stance, our team of instructors ensures that students remain grounded and stable. 4. Breath Control: The Engine of Power
Breath is the essential engine of Taekwon-Do. We teach a specific, sharp exhale at the exact moment of impact. This serves two vital purposes: it tenses the core muscles to protect the internal organs from counter-impact, and it synchronises the body’s movement with the strike. Without proper breath control, a student will tire quickly and lose the ability to generate force. With it, they become a focused machine of efficiency. This rhythmic breathing also helps to calm the mind during high-stress situations.
5. Sine Wave: The Application of Gravity
A feature unique to ITF Taekwon-Do is the Sine Wave motion. This involves a slight down-up-down movement of the body during the execution of a technique.
By rising and then dropping the body weight into the movement at the final moment, we are literally using gravity to add mass to our strikes. This is a core part of the authentic training we provide in Palmerston North.
It allows a practitioner to drop their weight into a block or strike. This makes the movement significantly more effective than a move that relies on muscle strength alone. The sine wave is perhaps the most famous example of the science of Taekwon-Do in action.
